Symposium ad Nauseum: Most Viscerally Satisfying Video Game Maneuver

vgfun

You know the moves, those favorite forward-down-forward inputs, the semi-circles, the 360 rotations, the QTEs, the fatality and so on and so forth, which culminate in a dope piece of pixelly satisfaction.

What might your favorite video game move be?

Confirmed: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for PSN, XBLA

d47d52705d79e5c1b9b29d84b31eb7a9

We speculated it, and now Capcom confirmed it: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is indeed coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360, but not quite in the way we hoped. The game will be released this summer on the PSN and Xbox Live networks for about fifteen dollars, but will not be receiving the HD remix treatment that Street Figher II received.

$10 Games at Best Buy this Week

savg

I’m sure you’re hip to this info, but big-box goliath Best Buy is blowing out a heap of video games that you may or may not be remotely interested in at the super-low price of $10 a pop.

The list is actually surprisingly robust and encompasses all the big systems (sorry Gamecube owners).  CheapAss Gamer, as always, is your friend.

A few highlights that jumped out at me: Too Human (360),  Pure (PS3/360), Devil May Cry 4 (PS3/360) and Ninja Gaiden DS (DS).

Any of you guys score some gaming on the cheap?

Weekend Warriors: What Chu Gamin’ Sucka?!

weekendwarriors_banner

As I sit here, alone at work.  Having not seen another living soul in nearly 4 hours.  Two thoughts are kicking around in the back of my head.  One is how hard my fiancee would kick my ass if I broke down and ordered this Blu-Ray set for $109.99.  The other is what I’m going to sit down and play after I get my parole from working on Saturday.  The rules are the same as always, post your thoughts about what games you’ll play if you get any time between now and Monday.

Review: Legends of Wrestlemania (PS3/Xbox360)

Lying beside you, here in the dark...

Lying beside you, here in the dark...

The Charge:
Relive.  Rewrite.  Redefine.

Opening Statement:
Hello, my name is Jon, and I am a wrestling addict.  The “soap opera for dudes” became my dark passenger at the tender age of 5, watching WWF Superstars and World Championship Wrestling (NWA) with my grandfather in the late 80s.  It didn’t matter which company I was watching, I’d take my wrestling however I could get it.  While my interest has wavered over the years, and my watching has diminished to one or two PPV shows, and the occasional episode on TV, I still consider myself a lifelong wrestling fan.  I miss the days of loosing my mind when Rick Derringer’s “Real American” would triumphantly blast through the speakers of my television, because that meant that in mere seconds, Hulk Hogan was going to walk through that curtain and vanquish the world’s evils inside the squared circle.  Protected by a hundred storey high wall of nostalgia (hulkastolgia?), these childhood favourites, these grapplers of yesteryear have now been repackaged in their very own wrestling videogame.  Legends of Wrestlemania takes our life-sized action figures and challenges gamers to relive their greatest battles, to rewrite the outcome of their greatest feuds, and to redefine an entire era of professional wrestling on what is without a doubt, the grandest stage of them all.

Review: The Godfather II (PS3/Xbox360/PC)

Call me "Scarface" ONE MORE TIME!

Call me "Scarface" ONE MORE TIME!

The Charge:

Act like a Mobster, think like a Don.

Opening Statement:

The sequel to EA’s popular open world title from generation’s past is upon us, coming from out of nowhere, with little hype compared to its predecessor. The question is; Will The Godfather II make you an offer you can’t refuse? Or does it sleep with the fishes.

Facts of the Case:

The Godfather II loosely follows the plot of the film in the same way the first game was built on a skeleton of the first film. You take the role of a minor Mafia captain, serving under the main character from the first game. A trip to Cuba leaves your boss dead, and Michael Corleone (NOT played nor looking anything like Al Pacino) tasking you with picking up the pieces and taking control of New York. This eventually leads you into Miami, and then, back to Cuba. Along the way you’ll encounter a throng of characters (both original and from the films), take over a ton of businesses, fight rival families, and build a criminal empire.

Breakdown: Top 5 World War II Games that Have Ninjas in Them

“The Finest Hour,” “The War to End All Wars,” “Super Nazi Death Time”—whatever you call it, World War II was a major turning point in modern history, and a huge boon to publishers in need of video game ideas. As surely as it’s never not offensive to shoot a Nazi in the face, we will likely never see an end to games based on this global conflict (at least, not until games based on the Canadian-American War hit shelves sometime in the next 40 years…believe me, it’s coming!). As with any video game sub-genre, these WWII titles have lots of things in common, from weapons and enemies to vehicles and campaigns. My favorite WWII game convention, though, has to be the ninjas. I’m not really sure where it started, but ever since some bored programmer thought it would be funny to add a little black-clad revisionist history to whatever French battle strategy sim he was working on, ninjas are as big a part of World War II games as tanks, POWs, and Jerry.

My top five favorite WWII games with ninjas, after the break:

Review: Rhythm Heaven (DS)

Lady, I don't even know you!

Lady, I don't even know you!

The Charge:
Tap into the rhythm!

Opening Statement:
With the music game genre already stuffed to the gills with a glut of titles since it exploded into pop-culture conscience with the successful birth of the Guitar Hero franchise in late 2005, Nintendo; probably the undisputed masters of the casual gaming niche, look to be eyeing a piece of that fat money pie with their latest release, Rhythm Heaven for the Nintendo DS.  The sequel to 2005’s Japanese only GBA release Rhythm Tengoku, Rhythm Heaven looks to take the simplistic, frenetic game play that developer TNX (the makers of the WarioWare series) are known for, and use the audio-visual improvement between the GBA and DS to stand atop the tide of lacklustre music titles clogging retail shelves worldwide.  But just how loudly and how proudly does Rhythm Heaven sing?
