E3 2009: Beans, Beans Everywhere

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

e3 As in “spilled,” of course. It seems that, with E3 2009 mere hours away, it’s impossible for anybody to keep a secret anymore. If the internet is good at anything besides porn, it’s leaking trade secrets and big company announcements before they were meant to be revealed. It happens a week before any major Apple press conference, and it happens in the lead-up to every Electronic Entertainment Expo. The year’s biggest gaming blow-out is supposed to be a week of jaw-dropping reveals and surprise announcements, but if you follow any of the gaming blogs chances are you already know about some of the biggest announcements already.

(If you haven’t heard the rumors, and don’t want to, put your fingers in your ears and absolutely do not click through to the rest of this story!)

The Genre That Won’t Die: Zombie Apocalypse Coming to XBLA and PSN

zombie-apocalypse-017

Fresh from Konami, here are some screenshots for Zombie Apocalypse, the latest in a recent rash of undead-related games. In Apocalypse, up to four players can take on waves of shambling braineaters (they really hate it when you call them that, by the way). The goal: “to survive 55 days of battles across seven environments.” Survive and unlock seven additional challenge modes.

I like twin-stick shooters as much as the next guy, and had a ton of fun blasting zombies in Left 4 Dead, but with zombie modes in the most recent Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto games, and a sequel to Dead Rising on the horizon, it’s time to ask how many zombie games is too many zombie games? Konami will no doubt find out when the downloadable Zombie Apocalypse hits Xbox LIVE Arcade and the Playstation Network sometime in Q2.

Looking at the screen shots, their biggest problem might be avoiding complaints that they’re borrowing a bit too much from Left 4 Dead. See what I mean (and read the full press release) after the break.

Electronic Gaming Monthly, after dying an unceremonious death when UGO purchased 1UP in January of 2009 has returned once again to the hands of the man who originally founded the legendary gaming rag.  Steve Harris, who started EGM in Summer of 1989 has reaquired both online and print distribution rights as part of an undisclosed agreement between himself and the Ziff-Davis Media Group.  His plans: Relaunch Electronic Gaming Monthly to the public by Fall of 2009.

"Get outta my hog!"

Halo 3’s high-res screen capture and “video” replay features continue to entertain and amaze me even though the game’s been out a few months shy of two years, so I figured I’d resurrect a series of posts from my old blog chronicling various Halo-related hijinks I’ve experienced while competing on Xbox Live. Customarily, I recount the situation leading to the screen capture and try to impart some Halo wisdom in the process – a process that will quite possibly only be interesting to me.
