Electronic Gaming Monthly, after dying an unceremonious death when UGO purchased 1UP in January of 2009 has returned once again to the hands of the man who originally founded the legendary gaming rag. Steve Harris, who started EGM in Summer of 1989 has reaquired both online and print distribution rights as part of an undisclosed agreement between himself and the Ziff-Davis Media Group. His plans: Relaunch Electronic Gaming Monthly to the public by Fall of 2009.
Harris states that he has “exciting plans for the evolution of what will once again be a leading independent voice for the gaming community.” Pretty exciting news, considering how many gamers out there either bought EGM as their first gaming mag, or graduated from Nintendo Power into reading EGM on a monthly basis. Word has not leaked yet as to whether any of the former staff will return to the magazine, or who Harris will be teaming with to fund this new publication, but with E3 starting this very week, one can expect more details to be releases regarding the future of Electronic Gaming Monthly. Anyone want to hedge a bet on the resurrection of Sushi-X?

I hope this isn’t a bad joke. As a hardcore Sega Genesis fan back in the early 90′s, I always looked forward to going to 7-11 & picking up EGM as soon as it was available. (I was young & not smart enough to get a subscription.) The Review Crew was the best feature & it was miles ahead of GamePro’s “every game gets 4 smiley faces” reviews. I remembered in 1 of the EGM year end awards issues, it chose the Genesis over the SNES as the best system to get & Sonic over Super Mario World as best game of the year. During the Genesis/SNES wars, I woud use this to brag to all my SNES owner friends & say, “HA! IN YOUR FACE! EGM says SEGA #1. NINTENDO SUCKS!”. I stopped reading EGM a few years ago, but if Harris is on board again, I would give it another chance.
