Between last night and this morning, Harmonix revealed 15 more tracks from the upcoming game The Beatles: Rock Band (in stores September 9). The visual style of the game, authentic replica instruments, and three-part harmonies impressed at this year’s E3, and took away some of the sting of having to shell out $250 for the game’s premium bundle. But with only 45 songs in the core game (compared to the 84 songs in Rock Band 2), every chosen track has to count. With approximately a hundred billion Beatles songs to choose from, you’ve gotta figure Harmonix is going to pick the best of the best, right? Right?
Maybe not.
With the 15 new tracks, here are the 25 songs we know about so far:
- “And Your Bird Can Sing”
- “Back in the U.S.S.R.”
- “Birthday”
- “Can’t Buy Me Love”
- “Day Tripper”
- “Dig a Pony”
- “Do You Want to Know a Secret”
- “Eight Days a Week”
- “Get Back”
- “Here Comes the Sun”
- “I Am the Walrus”
- “I Feel Fine”
- “I Saw Her Standing There”
- “I Want to Hold Your Hand”
- “I Wanna Be Your Man”
- “I’ve Got a Feeling”
- “Octopus’s Garden”
- “Paperback Writer”
- “Revolution”
- “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
- “Taxman”
- “Twist and Shout”
- “With a Little Help From My Friends”
- “Within You Without You”/”Tomorrow Never Knows”
- “Yellow Submarine”
No doubt Harmonix is waiting to reveal big guns like “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Help!,” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” but with only 20 slots left, this Beatles fan is getting nervous. Maybe there isn’t room in the full band formula for stripped down classics like “Yesterday” and “Norwegian Wood,” but do we really need this many Ringo-sung songs? I’m sure there are perks to being one of two surviving members of the world’s most famous band, but “I Wanna Be Your Man”? Really? And kitschy fun though they are, would you really put “Yellow Submarine” and “Octopus’s Garden” in a list of the 45 best Beatles songs? I wouldn’t.
Ringo-bashing aside, the tracklist doesn’t represent the other members very well, either. “Dig a Pony” and “Revolution” are lesser Lennon songs at best; ditto for the Paul tracks “I’ve Got a Feeling,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Birthday,” and “Back in the U.S.S.R.” Again, all fine on their respective albums, but not as part of a limited song list in a $60-plus game.
Oddly enough, George seems best represented in the game. “Taxman” and “Here Comes the Sun” are both killer (again, fingers crossed “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” makes the final cut) but I could have done without “Within You Without You.” I can only assume Harmonix partly agrees; why else would they have felt the need to double it up with the much-better “Tomorrow Never Knows”? (Update: Just found out this is the mix from the excellent Love release, which makes it a little better.)
To be fair, we’re a month and a half out from The Beatles: Rock Band‘s release, and Harmonix has nearly half the track list left to reveal. It’s already cool knowing I’ll be able to play songs like “I Am the Walrus,” “I Feel Fine,” and “Do You Want to Know a Secret” (yeah, I like that song). Knowing that I’d also be able to play “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “A Day in the Life,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Ticket to Ride,” “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” “Tell Me Why,” “Please Please Me,” and “In My Life” would be even better. Hopefully they don’t just save out the best stuff for downloadable content (like the rest of Abbey Road album, for instance, which will be available shortly after the game’s release).
I’m not bashing The Beatles: Rock Band. It might very well be the music game to get me back into the plastic instrument genre. I just want the best track list possible, as I’m sure every other Beatles fan does. As long as they don’t include “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” I’ll feel fine.

I don’t expect the game to have all the best tracks. That’s what DLC is for! Harmonix is gonna milk this one for all it’s worth.
My coder is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on several websites for about a year and am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard very good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into it? Any help would be really appreciated!
