Last week it was Sub Pop throwing their support behind the newly announced Rock Band Network. This week, internet songsmith extraordinaire Jonathan Coulton (best known to gamers for writing Portal’s “Still Alive” even though he should really be known for everything else he’s done) says he’s in, too, posting a poll on his blog asking fans which of his songs they’d like to see translated for Rock Band. (I voted for the obvious choices—”Re: Your Brains,” “Code Monkey,” “Creepy Doll,” and “Shop Vac,” with a write-in for “Someone is Crazy”; what about you?)
Whether you think Coulton’s music is amazing or just phenomenal, this kind of artist interest in the Rock Band Network is exactly the shot in the arm the music game genre needs to avoid going to way of the dodo. Coupled with The Beatles game, people who don’t care about metal and hard rock might actually buy Rock Band—people like, say, me.
