Is the PS3 Slim a New Console Launch? And Will it Matter?

Friday, August 21st, 2009

ps300

We batted around this question a bit on the podcast, and I think I’ll side with the consensus–the upcoming PS3 re-design does in fact feel like a new launch.  The console looks dramatically different, the crap Spider-Man font has been ditched for a cleaner logo and its unveiling to the public will tie in very closely to Sony’s monster title of the year, Uncharted: Among Thieves.

BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 26: Lean and Mean

aerobics_slim_bp

In honor of the big Sony announcement, Erich, Dave, and Tim keep this week’s show to a slim 34 minutes. Actually, it has more to do with Erich being sick and Dave needing to hit the local ice cream stand before it closes, but the boys still manage a quick Now Playing segment, talking Wii Sports Resort, Rhythm Heaven, Flipnote Studio, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, and everyone’s intention to buy Shadow Complex. The news segment is all about Sony’s second worst-kept secret: the PS3 Slim. Will a redesign and lower price tag mean a turnaround for this generation’s third place console? Finally, Symposium Ad Nauseum: Non-Main Stream Sports Games.

PS3 Slim, Price Drop Announced, Shock is Absent

psskinny

It was a horribly kept rumor, but finally Sony has spilled the beans about both it’s svelte new PS3, a handsome devil for sure, and price cuts to its bloated siblings.  The slim comes with a 120GB hard drive and a $299 price tag.  The 80 gigger has been chopped to $299 and the 160 GB will retail at $399.  Not bad and overdue.

This is no doubt music the ears of third party developers and, I would guess, anyone on the fence over dipping into Sony’s pool.

Baseball, hockey, football, basketball–screw them.

What is a memorable not-quite-mainstream sports video game?  And All-Pro Curling 2009 doesn’t count.

Vote for the next Genesis XBLA game

Monday, August 17th, 2009

genesis20

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sega Genesis (a horrible scorecard outlining my own mortality and extreme agedness) Sega has an online poll up for fans to vote on the game they’d most like to see released on XBLA. Talk about Sophie’s Choice here–every game is a standout. Can’t we have them ALL?

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sega Genesis, we’re putting the power back in the fans’ hands and letting you determine the next title we’ll release on Xbox LIVE Arcade! Just pick from the Genesis classics below and cast your vote between August 14th and August 21st.

The games up for consideration:

  • Earthworm Jim
  • Golden Axe II
  • Shining Force
  • Revenge of Shinobi
  • Streets of Rage
  • Toejam & Earl
  • Wonderboy

As of this writing, over 40,000 votes have been cast (and amazingly almost half of them for Earthworm Jim, never saw that coming) so be sure and help Dave log AS MANY VOTES AS POSSIBLE for Streets of Rage. He needs your help!

Metal and Rock Band. It’s a combination much akin to Chocolate and Peanut Butter, or Nascar and Beer, or Canada and Communisim…

Fans rejoice, as The latest Rock Band track pack, the METAL pack, drops on (R)Oc(k)tober 13th. The same day as another certain metal-centric title that just finished whooping Activision’s ass. Kicking corporate butt is TRU-METAL!

Tracklisting is after the break – but pardon me if i flip out a little at the fact that I Mother Earth’s seminal anthem, ‘Levitate’ is included as an exclusive track! Precursor to greater things, every elitist alterna-metal fan with a eye to the Great White North will tell you that I Mother Earth’s first album, Dig was a metal classic, and their sophmore effort, Scenery and Fish, is one of the finest Canadian rock albums of all time.

So… Harmonix… how about some Tea Party? Tragically Hip? Sam Roberts? Matt Mays??

See the list after the break… And watch the video…

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (XBLA, PSN)

"Hey Shredder! Put that statue back you bloated beanbag!"

Tonight I dine on turtle soup.

    The Charge:
    Kla-chink! LET’S KICK SHELL!!

    Opening Statement:
Let’s begin today’s review with a moment of self-reflection.  If you’ve been a gamer since the 1980s, you’re probably just as guilty as me, and innumerable legions of others; of pumping a near college tuition’s worth of quarters into the multitudinous myriad of beat’em ups that once dominated the video arcades of times gone by.  (more…)
