BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 25: Mainlander Go Home

trespassers

Erich spends a good hour trying to separate feuding Canadians Steve and Adam, all while talking games like the Mothership Zeta expansion to Fallout 3, the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo, Left 4 Dead, Wii Sports Resort, Rhythm Heaven, and a massive MMORPG discussion ranging from World of Warcraft to the new documentary Second Skin. In news, Star Wars hits the Virtual Console, Steve loves the Brutal Legend soundtrack, Bioshock 2 has an S.O.S. for the world, Madden 10 has swimsuit issues, and Guitar Hero 5 takes its guns to town. This week’s Symposium Ad Nauseum is surprisingly tricky, but not as tricky as getting Steve to kick off a brand new segment.

More Unannounced Beatles Rock Band Songs Unofficially Announced?

beatles_rock_band

I know, I know. I wrote a scathing opinion piece a few weeks back complaining about the announced tracklist for The Beatles: Rock Band. Perhaps I was a little quick to judge. I realize now that Harmonix and Apple (records not computers) are picking songs based not on popularity, but on how fun they are to play. As of last week, the grand total of announced songs stood at 26 (with “Ticket to Ride” being the newest addition). Less than a month until the game’s release, that leaves 19 of the game’s 45 songs a mystery. Or does it?

The Charge:
Does solid tech a good game make?

Opening Statement:

When the Nintendo Wii launched in 2005 to a shockingly positive reception, its bundled pack-in title, Wii Sports played a huge part in its success, eventually going on to outsell the original Super Mario Bros., becoming the best-selling pack-in title of all time with near 50 Million titles moved.  Just to help drill that little statistic home…that’s more than six times what Halo 3 sold, ten times that of the last console Zelda title.  Continue reading Review: Wii Sports Resort

Metal Gear Solid Touch Will Soon Cost Less Than a Cardboard Box

mgst

Taking a cue, perhaps, from PopCap who saw sales soar after temporarily lowering the price of Peggle on the iPhone App Store, Konami will be dropping Metal Gear Solid Touch to $2.99 for three days, from August 13 to 15. When the mobile adaptation of the stealth game hit the iPhone back in March, it met with a tepid response from gamers who wanted more than a third person on-rail shooter for $7.99. Since then, the game has gotten a couple of free updates, adding eight more levels and unlockable wallpaper. No doubt Konami is hoping a price cut will boost sales during the price drop and beyond. As PopCap found out with the great $0.99 Peggle experiment of ’09, increased presence on the App Store can mean increased sales even after the price cut ends. Will it work as well at $2.99?

The full press release after the break.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Demo Impressions

bmaa

Took the 1.5 GB demo of Eidos’s much-anticipated take on the Caped Crusader for a spin over the weekend.  I really liked it, but I’m not totally sold.

I’m all about Batman, and have been longing for any kind of sweet Dark Knight video gaming that I’ve embraced such iffy stuff as The Rise of Sin TzuArkham Asylum, when it was first revealed, showed big promise, and judging from the brief time I had with the demo, it looks like it might live up to the expectations.

Symposium ad Nauseum: Worst FPS Weapons

klobb

Slow week coming up–I can feel it.  The temperature is hot and muggy and productivity is going to see a serious nosedive.

So how about we just phone in the SaD today?  This selection should be wide open and not require much brainpower.

Anywho, first person shooter, crappiest weapon….go.

Bargain Bingeing: Golden Axe Beast Rider

gabr

Hollywood Video has a massive video game sale a couple of weeks back and I came away with Lost Plant and Golden Axe for $5.  Haven’t played Lost Planet yet, but I’ve been hacking and slashing my way through Beast Rider, which, judging by reviews, I’d been prepared to loathe.

Still five bucks.

Is it worth it?

Music Game Genre Saved: Jonathan Coulton Working On Rock Band Network

jonathan_coulton

Last week it was Sub Pop throwing their support behind the newly announced Rock Band Network. This week, internet songsmith extraordinaire Jonathan Coulton (best known to gamers for writing Portal‘s “Still Alive” even though he should really be known for everything else he’s done) says he’s in, too, posting a poll on his blog asking fans which of his songs they’d like to see translated for Rock Band. (I voted for the obvious choices—”Re: Your Brains,” “Code Monkey,” “Creepy Doll,” and “Shop Vac,” with a write-in for “Someone is Crazy”; what about you?)

Whether you think Coulton’s music is amazing or just phenomenal, this kind of artist interest in the Rock Band Network is exactly the shot in the arm the music game genre needs to avoid going to way of the dodo. Coupled with The Beatles game, people who don’t care about metal and hard rock might actually buy Rock Band—people like, say, me.
