Review: Scribblenauts (DS)

scribblenauts_00

The Charge:
Write anything, solve anything.

Opening Statement:
Rumored, whispered about, discussed and debated—rarely does a Nintendo DS game see so much speculation. Enter Scribblenauts, developed by 5th Cell, winner of “Best of Show” at E3 2009, the first portable game ever to do so. From its earliest teaser trailers and first-hand reports, people knew this was going to be something significant, a game with endless possibilities and creative applications.

Well, kinda. Now that the game is in hand, hindsight tells us it was almost impossible for it to live up to everyone’s expectations. In many ways, Scribblenauts is exactly as advertised—you can write anything into it, and it appears. The possibilities and combinations of items are seriously impressive, and you will be stunned at how much time and energy has gone into predicting every weird object you could possibly think to conjure. On the other hand, something had to give… and where things go tepid are the gameplay elements.

Symposium ad Nauseum: Non-Traditional Weapons

belt

In honor of the upcoming Bayonetta–which looks over-the-top great in its over-the-topness–and the titular heroine’s ability to attack and kill people with her hair, here’s a topic exploring alternative weapon choices for video game characters.

The weirder the better.

Tales of Monkey Island Episode One Free Tomorrow (Possibly Later Today)

tales_free

Normally, I celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day, by pretending it’s Talk Like a Normal Person Day. Not this year. That’s because the point & click-ers at Telltale Games are making the first episode in their brand-new Tales of Monkey Island series free for one day only, on September 19.

Details are a little sketchy as to whether you’ll need to download the demo first or whether it will be a straight-up free download from their store, but either way I suggest you head over to their official website and check it out.

Because “tomorrow” starts at 12:01 GMT, those of us on the East Coast of the US can get the game at 7:01 p.m. tonight (if you live elsewhere, you’ll need to do the appropriate math).

The most exciting thing about this offer? I finally have a reason to use the Windows partition on my Mac.

Review: Need for Speed-Shift (PS3/Xbox360)

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel

The Charge:
What kind of driver are you?

Opening Statement:
With the onset of every fall season (which we affectionately refer to as Hurricane Retail), there are several certainties. For racing fans, one certainty is always a new entry in the Need for Speed series. It’s been a while since EA’s venerable racing marquee brand has been worth notice or discussion, but Need for Speed: Shift hopes to change that. Does it stall at the start? Or is this one racer with horsepower to spare.

Erich, Steve, and Jon celebrate the big three-oh with a hefty discussion of games old and new, including Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Scribblenauts, The Beatles: Rock Band, Shadow Complex, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Grand Theft Auto IV DLC, and Vampire: The Masquerade — Redemption. In News, Nintendo may or may not be price dropping the Wii, Zelda: Spirit Tracks gets a release date, Bobby Kotick hates fun, people are buying PS3s, and Uncharted 2 early reviews are great. This week’s Symposium Ad Nauseum: Shooting Things with a Spaceship.

Review: Muramasa – The Demon Blade (Wii)

Mura01

Lyrics, fill in the gap -- Drop that bass and get the Ninja Rap!

The Charge:
Slice like a ninja – Cut like a razor blade!

Opening Statement:
Okay, every red-blooded kid who lived and breathed during the 1980s knows that ninjas are concentrated awesome.  And I don`t mean that watered down, sugar-rush Naruto crap.  I`m talking straight up, sword swingin’, star flingin’ shinobi bad-ass.  Hell, even Michael Dudikoff had a cup of coffee with fame and fortune because he made a few movies concerning ninjas, and he was a total douche (my apologies to any hardcore Dudikoffers out there).  I’ll usually try any video game that features Ninjas in a prominent role (usually to my regret), which led me to this day’s review.  Continue reading Review: Muramasa – The Demon Blade (Wii)

Under the Radar – The RPG Edition

These guys are ready! But are you?

These guys are ready! But are you?

With the busy fall season officially upon us, I’m sure we’re all prepared to face a deluge of console software in the coming months.

Sure, everyone is following the big guns, we’re all ready for and awaiting our Uncharted Twos and our Modern Warfare twos and our Assassin’s Creed Twos and on and on. I’m not going to preview or run down the hot commodities here, no, my purpose here is to shed some light on a few other titles you may have overlooked in the stream of sequel hype that preceeds the glut of triple-A high-profile wallet-fodder.

I’m kicking things off with my personal favorite genre. I’m a dice roller, a stat geek, a fantasy devotee with more repeat readings of The Lord Of The Rings under my belt than i care to admit. Join me brave adventurer, or whatever, y’know, as i present to thee, or you, 5 Role-players coming to consoles this fall (marring unforseen delays) that just might be worth your time and hard earned cash, perhaps you’ll see something that looks kinda cool.
