Best Games of the Year 2009: Steve’s List

pv09

With the curtain closing on one hell of a banner year in gaming, here’s yet another “best of” list to whet your appetite. I had a hard time whittling this list down to even ten titles, let alone the proposed five that everyone else has agreed upon. Obviously one of us is more hardcore than the rest. There are 5 extras to fill the 6 to 10 slots, and there’d be a list of about 12 honorable mentions that I had a blast messing with. I’ll also say that, much like Erich, my list is probably considerably different from everyone else’s, but that’s more because I march to the beat of my own drum. Leave some feedback if you want to tell me how insane I am. Check it out after le break.

BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 35: The Big Canadian Brawl-a-palooza!

episode35

Join Pixel Verdict’s Canadian contingency as they waste about an hour of your time. Jon’s been playing Brutal Legend, and throws the gauntlet down for one Tim Schafer of Doublefine Studios (Dear Tim, Jon’s coming, and Hell’s comin’ with him). Adam has been spending quality time with his wife and Rock Band. Steve’s wife, meanwhile, is cheating on him with his copy of Brutal Legend, so Steve drowns his loneliness with Demon’s Souls, and the amazing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Borderlands. The boys discuss the news of the week (or lack thereof) with their typically Canadian lack of zeal, including Steve’s dissatisfaction with Natal support for Fable II and Fable III; Grand Theft Auto thrusting beyond the borders of good taste (yet again); a new game from the Timeshift guys; and Street Fighter IV‘s Seth gets tougher (read: cheaper). Adam waxes philosophical about a particular 90′s cinematic masterpiece featuring a pre-Party of Five Scott Wolfe and short shorts-wearin’ Alyssa Milano. You’ll have to listen to find out what it is. It all ends in a climactic discussion about brawlers good and bad.

To reiterate: TIM SCHAFER! Jon Mercer (PSN ID: Kidinthehelmet) WANTS YOUR BLOOD! Meet him on the virtual battlefield of Brutal Legend if you DARE!

Bonus: listen carefully for Mrs. Adam’s brief cameo…

Under the Radar – The RPG Edition

These guys are ready! But are you?

These guys are ready! But are you?

With the busy fall season officially upon us, I’m sure we’re all prepared to face a deluge of console software in the coming months.

Sure, everyone is following the big guns, we’re all ready for and awaiting our Uncharted Twos and our Modern Warfare twos and our Assassin’s Creed Twos and on and on. I’m not going to preview or run down the hot commodities here, no, my purpose here is to shed some light on a few other titles you may have overlooked in the stream of sequel hype that preceeds the glut of triple-A high-profile wallet-fodder.

I’m kicking things off with my personal favorite genre. I’m a dice roller, a stat geek, a fantasy devotee with more repeat readings of The Lord Of The Rings under my belt than i care to admit. Join me brave adventurer, or whatever, y’know, as i present to thee, or you, 5 Role-players coming to consoles this fall (marring unforseen delays) that just might be worth your time and hard earned cash, perhaps you’ll see something that looks kinda cool.

Demon’s Souls – US Collector’s Edition inbound! Dated!

demons_souls_dlx

Pictured above, the "stop importing from Play-Asia" Edition!

Atlus has revealed its plans for the US release of the cult import hit and PS3 exclusive, Demon’s Souls.

The game drops in North America on October 6th in two varieties. The regular edition, and a special deluxe edition. The deluxe edition comes packaged in a spiffy slipcase and includes a 150 page strategy guide (which you’re gonna need!) There’s also an exclusive art book being offered as a pre-order bonus through select retailers. Regular edition goes for 59.99(US) and the deluxe will set you back 69.99(US).

If you’ll recall, I thought pretty highly of the Asian version of the game. Whether or not Atlus has made any alterations to the game itself remains to be seen, but I’m sure one of us will be back with our thoughts on the domestic flavor of Demon’s Souls when it drops in October.

Demon’s Souls is coming to the US!

My personal pick for best game of 2009 (Colossal review here!) thus far has finally been announced for North America.

It’s not coming from Sony (who released it in Asia as a first party title… It’s not coming from Ubisoft (who typically releases From Software titles in iur neck of the woods).

But RPG hardcore publisher ATLUS has picked up the slack.

The press release after the break!

BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 7: Border Crossing

border-crossing

It’s Canada 3, America 1 as Erich welcomes Adam, Jon, and Steve to talk games and correct his meager knowledge of Canadian geography. They talk Demon’s Souls, Sly Cooper 2, Hammerin’ Hero, Legends of Wrestlemania, Suikoden Tierkreis, Resident Evil 4, and Tetris DS. In news, Jon’s excitement about an early release for PS3-exclusive inFamous turns into a debate about the marketing wisdom of using demos as pre-order bonuses, Steve joins the throngs of Xbox 360 owners rejoicing over Microsoft adding the E74 error to its 3-year warranty, and Adam uses his +4 charm to get everyone to care about the new World of Warcraft patch. After minor technical difficulties, the boys wrap things up with this week’s Symposium Ad Nauseum, asking deep questions about why the gaming cliches that bug us the most are often those we hold most dear.
