Sega Emulator made official on iPhone

Now here’s an interesting development in the world of potent portable gaming. It appears that Sega is jumping onto the iPhone/Touch gaming platform by developing its own emulation service to kick out Sega Genesis games straight to your phone, as reported by Gizmodo.

Sega has released emulated bundles of games before on the iPhone, but this is different. Instead of a bundle job (like the Ultimate Collection pack that made the rounds on the consoles), this is to be a full-fledged Virtual Store, offering a-la-carte purchases of classic Genesis games for (slightly) inflated prices.

Ghouls ‘n Ghosts announced for iPhone, terrifying thumbs everywhere

No doubt deciding that touchscreen controls were the missing element to make the game easy and enjoyable to play, Capcom has announced at the Tokyo Game Show that the eponymous, tear-generating side-scroller Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is being ported to the iPhone platform. I tremble with terror.

According to Touch Arcade, the game will resemble the PSP version Ultimate Ghosts ‘n Goblins, mixing 2D and 3D elements. No price or release date have been announced yet.

Seriously, Capcom, why do you want your audience to cry tears of rage? This franchise has been naught but merciless on gamers the world over for more than twenty years. Were we not despondent and depressed enough now for your tastes? Do you really see the need to punish gamers with a game (already near-impossible in difficulty and unforgiving controls) by mashing a glass screen with our thumbs?

I mean, you already can’t time your jumps correctly playing Ghosts ‘n Goblins. The thought of doing that with an iPhone…

Metal Gear Solid Touch Will Soon Cost Less Than a Cardboard Box

Taking a cue, perhaps, from PopCap who saw sales soar after temporarily lowering the price of Peggle on the iPhone App Store, Konami will be dropping Metal Gear Solid Touch to $2.99 for three days, from August 13 to 15. When the mobile adaptation of the stealth game hit the iPhone back in March, it met with a tepid response from gamers who wanted more than a third person on-rail shooter for $7.99. Since then, the game has gotten a couple of free updates, adding eight more levels and unlockable wallpaper. No doubt Konami is hoping a price cut will boost sales during the price drop and beyond. As PopCap found out with the great $0.99 Peggle experiment of ’09, increased presence on the App Store can mean increased sales even after the price cut ends. Will it work as well at $2.99?

Potent Portables: Peggle for iPhone sale $.99

Do you desire a crippling, debilitating addiction, but can’t afford the cost of heroin or all the fussing with needles? Looking for your next fix, but tired of the bloody noses that come with constant cocaine use? Have we got the fix for you, my friends. Peggle, the PopCap Games game that destroys marriages and lives, received a faithful port to the iPhone platform, and is now on sale for a measly 99 cents. That’s right, less than a dollar.

From someone who a) is in rehab for Peggle addiction and b) spent five bucks on the game full price when it came out, this is a fantastic deal. It’s not just that I’m lonely here in rehab with no one to play Peggle with. Honestly!

Potent Portables: The iPhone As A Gaming Platform?

In many ways, the iPhone platform is like a portable version of the Wii. You spend a lot of time waggling, using unconventional motion-sensitive controls to awkwardly control your game, both systems have high design aesthetics, “real” gamers don’t consider them serious consoles, and perhaps most importantly, out of thousands or so games available on the system, only a half-dozen are any good.

Even this humble reviewer, as an owner of an iPhone, I find myself hard-pressed to consider the device a “gaming platform”, despite Apple’s marketing campaign to brand it as one. Then again, according to 1UP, there are over 6,000 games currently available right now via the Apple Store. Sure, most of them suck, the development equivalent of five-minute time wasting carnival games… but in terms of numbers, it is an impressive tally.
