REVIEW: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3/XBOX360)

The Charge:
Dark times need a dark hero!

Opening Statement:
Konami’s Castlevania series is no stranger to dabbling in the 3rd dimension, usually with mixed results. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow marks the first entry in the series for the high-def generation, and the latest attempt at bringing the monster-slaying opus into the 3rd dimension. Does Spanish developer Mercury Steam (Clive Barker’s Jericho) triumph where others fell short? Or is this one another whip to the face for classic Castlevania fans?

Ninety-Nine Nights 2 Coming Stateside, Possibly Only Me Happy

 nn3

Konami has picked up the North American publishing rights to the hack-and-slash sequel and, frankly, I’m overjoyed.  I really enjoyed the first game, nonsense story and painful voice acting and all.  Typically, the Dynasty Warriors formula isn’t my bag, but for some reason I really latched onto the mayhem of Ninety-Nights.  Something about wiping out 100s of dudes with a single movie is really appealing.

The game, an Xbox 360 exclusive, is bound for this summer.  Gameplay video after the jump.

Metal Gear Solid Touch Will Soon Cost Less Than a Cardboard Box

mgst

Taking a cue, perhaps, from PopCap who saw sales soar after temporarily lowering the price of Peggle on the iPhone App Store, Konami will be dropping Metal Gear Solid Touch to $2.99 for three days, from August 13 to 15. When the mobile adaptation of the stealth game hit the iPhone back in March, it met with a tepid response from gamers who wanted more than a third person on-rail shooter for $7.99. Since then, the game has gotten a couple of free updates, adding eight more levels and unlockable wallpaper. No doubt Konami is hoping a price cut will boost sales during the price drop and beyond. As PopCap found out with the great $0.99 Peggle experiment of ’09, increased presence on the App Store can mean increased sales even after the price cut ends. Will it work as well at $2.99?

The full press release after the break.

The Genre That Won’t Die: Zombie Apocalypse Coming to XBLA and PSN

zombie-apocalypse-017

Fresh from Konami, here are some screenshots for Zombie Apocalypse, the latest in a recent rash of undead-related games. In Apocalypse, up to four players can take on waves of shambling braineaters (they really hate it when you call them that, by the way). The goal: “to survive 55 days of battles across seven environments.” Survive and unlock seven additional challenge modes.

I like twin-stick shooters as much as the next guy, and had a ton of fun blasting zombies in Left 4 Dead, but with zombie modes in the most recent Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto games, and a sequel to Dead Rising on the horizon, it’s time to ask how many zombie games is too many zombie games? Konami will no doubt find out when the downloadable Zombie Apocalypse hits Xbox LIVE Arcade and the Playstation Network sometime in Q2.

Looking at the screen shots, their biggest problem might be avoiding complaints that they’re borrowing a bit too much from Left 4 Dead. See what I mean (and read the full press release) after the break.

Six Days in Fallujah dropped by Konami – Soldiers on.

sdif3

We questioned the wisdom of making a realistic combat sim based on actual events that happened in the second Iraq War a few weeks back on BLAST PROCESSING (If you ain’t listening, what the hell is your problem man!?), and we got out of the gate just ahead of the minor breeze of controversy that followed.

Konami, respoding to the early outcry, unceremoniously dropped the title earlier this week.
