WoW: The Shattering!

Farewell, Azeroth! It’s been a blast. Now you have a gigantic hole in you, and a dragon came out of it. You’ll probably want to get a doctor to look at that.

Must have been something Azeroth ate.

The Shattering is here! Blizzard’s massively addictive and popular behemoth World of Warcraft will see the release of its newest world-changing expansion Cataclysm in two short weeks. In preparation, the latest patch released today has torn the world of Azeroth a new hole, literally. Fans looking to play the new character classes (goblens and worgens) and explore new high-level content will have to wait until December 7th, but the world changes today.

Entire continents have shifted. Lands have been torn asunder by rocks and lava and destruction. Cities have burned down, and new encampments have been hastily erected. It’s a whole new game, folks.

Oh, and they molested warlocks something fierce. But that’s how it goes. Everyone gets a taste of the nerf hammer.

Check the jump below for a list of the official changes.

Everquest II: The Shards of Destiny – now live for the taking

shard_of_destiny300_blk

Sony’s Everquest II continues to soldier on with the release of the latest game update: Everquest II The Shards of Destiny.

Anyone who’s been into MMO’s for any amount of time (pre-WoW) can tell you that EQII is probably one of the most friendly and inviting communities on the scene, and the gameplay, while not quite so “pick up and play” as World of Warcraft, is user friendly and engaging. I haven’t been back to Norrath for a while, but this looks like a pretty extensive update, and may convince me to reactivate.

Features include:

• Chronomagic: Down-tier your level to experience content you may have previously missed while you were leveling up

• Enter the Shard of Love: For the first time ever, players will be able to explore the home of Erollisi Marr

• All new 4x Dungeon: Test your skills in Miragul’s Planar Shard

• Achievement System: Track and share your accomplishments with other players

• Housing Addition: All houses will receive a new room where you can use your creativity and expand your collections

Log in now and the Shards of Destiny update is there for the downloading.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm announced

wow-cataclysm-logo-580[1]

Announced at BlizzCon 2009, the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion pack is revealed to be World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, confirming numerous rumors swirling around the internet, revealed now as entirely true. In terms of in-game shake-ups, this is as big as things get in the world of MMORPG, with the return of an ancient and long-buried evil literally tearing the world a new hole, literally. The whole Cataclysm thing is an accurate title, as Blizzard will use this opportunity to go back and re-design the entire shape of Azeroth, modifying, removing and sundering entire continents and zones.

A breakdown of the new additions after the jump.

Age of Conan – Once more into the breach!

title1

Editor’s note: click on screens for the super huge colossal version

Age of Conan in spite of its initial success, is a game that has been rife with turmoil since its auspicious debut. I joined in about a week or so after launch, which spurred on a massive computer upgrade for me, and I promptly fell in love with the game, just as everyone else on the web turned violently aggressive and stormed the official forums with torches and pitchforks. I played my first character, an Aquilonian Dark Templar named Asselar, into the low 40′s before I hit the “content chasm” and a general sense of malaise set in, no doubt compounded by the oncoming rush of new console titles last fall.

Approaching the game’s first anniversary, with Direct X 10 support now implemented for even prettier visuals, and upon hearing about many of the additions and changes that have come, and are coming in the very near future (including a COMPLETE overhaul of all of the game’s weapons and armor) I’ve decided to fire up the old account, blow the cobwebs off, and reacquaint myself with the world of Conan. Rather than pick up where I left off after about 8 months absence, I decided to start fresh. I’ll be keeping a journal of sorts of my experience with the new, and hopefully improved Age of Conan.

World of Warcraft: it’s Patch 3.1 day!

wow1

It’s going to be one crowded day in Azeroth. After today’s normal Tuesday downtime for scheduled maintenance, it appears that the long-awaited World of Warcraft Patch 3.1 is going live on all servers today. Nothing like patch day to break every single one of your add-ons. If you play WoW, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Like many MMORPG games, World of Warcraft is an ever-shifting, changing world, updating itself constantly with new quests, new rewards and new ways to justify its tens of millions of subscribers to keep forking over $15 a month. Patch 3.1 is more than a simple in-game upgrade; this is the first major patch since the Wrath of the Lich King expansion came out. The changes in 3.1 will effect virtually every aspect of gameplay. More after the jump.

Pay for Play? Time Warner Introduces New Pricing Structure

onlivecoyote2

In a move that’s sure to have a vast multitude of people (gamers especially) shredding the self-esteem of innocent customer service agents everywhere, Business Week reported Time Warner Cable is rolling out a tiered pricing structure in several markets across the country. That means the more internet bandwidth you use – whether for gaming, internet surfing, downloading movies or files or whatever – the more money you’ll be shelling out. It’s similar to current cell phone plans and it’s “a strategy that’s likely to rankle consumers but be copied by competitors,” as the article so succinctly states it.

Free Trial: Age of Conan

age-of-conan-11

Hey, who wants to play Age Of Conan, Funcom’s MMORPG set in the mystical world of the Hyborian kingdoms? Yeah, me either. Or anyone else for that matter. Going has been tough for the beleaguered online PC game, with audiences rapidly dwindling from the game after a few promising months of sales, even going so far as to close down nearly thirty of its servers because no one was using them.

Well, if you’re curious to check the game out without making a capital venture investment, Funcom has announced they are offering a free trial of the game. Download it, register yourself and you get seven days to futz about chasing around scantily-clad women in a mystical land of barbarians and warlords. Actually, that doesn’t sound… terrible… does it? Maybe I’ll be checking this out after all.

Funcom hopes this will drum up renewed interest in their MMORPG, and it just might. After all, giving away 14-day trials of World of Warcraft helped secure the current king its tens of millions of monthly subscribers. Age of Conan is more like hundreds of thousands at best. Still, free is free!
