BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 97 – Portals, Parkour, and one other P-word.

Join Steve and Jon as they once again waste your time with thoughts on Portal 2, Brink, Socom 4, Some crazy Japanese RPG for the Nintendo DS, and Nascar: 2011: THE GAME!

In the news, all the talk is focused on the Playstation Network Crisis (Day 19!) with commentary from our war correspondent on the frontlines: Jack Bastard: Ass Kicker.

There’s also some excitement generated by a host of announcments from the Namco-Bandai camp this past week, including a locked down release window for Dark Souls (“Spiritual successor” to Steve’s game of 2009 – Demon’s Souls) which will be coming in a nice special edition. We love special editions!

NEW RELEASES – August 2010

Get your virtual cash ready, August closes out the summer with a digital buffett of downloadable goodies. Meanwhile, there’s not much happening on the retail front, with only 3 games worth talking about (4 if you hail from the USofA and like Football) in the promising, ultraviolent Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, the epic Mobbed up open world sequel, Mafia II (That collector’s edition is mighty pretty!) and of course, Team Ninja’s much hyped return to Nintendo’s classic Metroid franchise, Metroid: Other M.

Stock up on Xbox Live Points cards and PSN gift cards while you can!

August 4th

This is a wierd month, digital content being so prominent in the face of a sparse retail month. I’m all over Kane & Lynch 2, being one of five fans of the original. I’m sure Mafia II will be in my home as soon as it hits as well. What August releaseas are you most looking forward to? Or are you planning on clogging the internet tubes with downloads?

Review: Mega Man 10 (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare)

MM10-01

The Charge:
Dual FX Engines!!  Parallel Hyperbit Interface!!
Opening Statement:
My lifelong affair with Capcom’s stalwart ‘Mega Man’ franchise is by no means a well kept secret.  I’d go as far as to say it occupies the throne that is my favourite gaming franchise.  Since the heady times of its heyday, there have been close to 120 titles released that bear the ‘Mega Man’ moniker, more than both the Street Fighter and Resident Evil franchises combined; and during my career in gaming, I’ve owned close to 40 of them personally.  That can mean only one thing, I’m totally the perfect candidate to review “Mega Man 10”, Capcom’s latest return to the series that built the foundations of their house.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (XBLA, PSN)

"Hey Shredder! Put that statue back you bloated beanbag!"

Tonight I dine on turtle soup.

The Charge:
Kla-chink! LET’S KICK SHELL!!

Opening Statement:
Let’s begin today’s review with a moment of self-reflection.  If you’ve been a gamer since the 1980s, you’re probably just as guilty as me, and innumerable legions of others; of pumping a near college tuition’s worth of quarters into the multitudinous myriad of beat’em ups that once dominated the video arcades of times gone by.  Continue reading Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (XBLA, PSN)

The Genre That Won’t Die: Zombie Apocalypse Coming to XBLA and PSN

zombie-apocalypse-017

Fresh from Konami, here are some screenshots for Zombie Apocalypse, the latest in a recent rash of undead-related games. In Apocalypse, up to four players can take on waves of shambling braineaters (they really hate it when you call them that, by the way). The goal: “to survive 55 days of battles across seven environments.” Survive and unlock seven additional challenge modes.

I like twin-stick shooters as much as the next guy, and had a ton of fun blasting zombies in Left 4 Dead, but with zombie modes in the most recent Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto games, and a sequel to Dead Rising on the horizon, it’s time to ask how many zombie games is too many zombie games? Konami will no doubt find out when the downloadable Zombie Apocalypse hits Xbox LIVE Arcade and the Playstation Network sometime in Q2.

Looking at the screen shots, their biggest problem might be avoiding complaints that they’re borrowing a bit too much from Left 4 Dead. See what I mean (and read the full press release) after the break.

Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic FREE on PSN

free

This weekend only, the indie brawler Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic is available for the low price of zero dollars on the PlayStation Network by way of a cross-promotion with Sprint. Created by Tarsier Studios and based on the original 2005 title, the game is like a wackier version of Super Smash Bros. with exaggerated cartoon physics and rag doll mania by way of a Shaw Brothers film. Definitely a quick way to get a fun multiplayer fix. And since the game normally sells for ten dollars, this is a sweet deal.

One small caveat: this “free as in beer” deal only works for the US PlayStation store, so us filthy Canadians and the like are out of luck on this one. Drat and bother.

Confirmed: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for PSN, XBLA

d47d52705d79e5c1b9b29d84b31eb7a9

We speculated it, and now Capcom confirmed it: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is indeed coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360, but not quite in the way we hoped. The game will be released this summer on the PSN and Xbox Live networks for about fifteen dollars, but will not be receiving the HD remix treatment that Street Figher II received.
