Review: Army of Two – The 40th Day (PS3/Xbox360)

aot-1

The Charge:
Fight Together! Survive Together!

Opening Statement:
The first Army of Two was an effective 3rd person shooter that borrowed liberally from other, better games and made a decent first impression before quickly fading to bargain bins. The requisite sequel is now upon us, and our titular army of two has some new tricks up their sleeves. Does Army of Two: The 40th Day rise above the machismo and fist-bumping to provide a world-cass shooter?

Facts of the Case:
Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios have long parted ways with former employers at SSC. As the owners and sole operatives of TransWorld Operatives, they answer to no one save their sassy handler, Alice Murray. The dynamic duo has just finished up a routine job in Shanghai when all hell breaks loose. An armed force has launched an all out assault on the city, and carnage is everywhere. Our brothers in arms find themselves racing through Shanghai as it crumbles all around them. Co-op tactics and visceral action are the order of the day as Salem and Rios struggle to find Alice in the chaos, and attempt to discover the truth behind the 40th Day Initiative.

Review: Bayonetta (PS3) – Import

Bayonetta07

Note:  The following review is based on an imported copy of the Japanese release.  Bayonetta is scheduled for release in North America on January 5th, 2010.

Opening Statement:
I’ll admit, for the last year or so, I haven’t been the most eager to play Sega’s upcoming Bayonetta, a prophesized action epic from Platinum Games (the crazed geniuses behind last year’s Mad World for the Wii) and director Hideki Kamiya (the future legend behind Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and Okami; pay your respects at the altar).  As I just typed the evidence of its pedigree, I realize that my bull headed and blind prejudice has denied me any sense of excitement for what has turned out to be a concentrated burst of gaming dynamite.  With Bayonetta, Kamiya and Platinum Games have served up a witch’s brew of devilish fun. Review: Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines (PSP/PSPgo)

ac-bloodlines-banner

The Charge:

For the first time, Become a master assassin on the PSP System.

Opening Statement:
Hot on the heels of Assassin’s Creed II comes the first iteration of the series for Sony’s powerhouse portable. Does Assassin’s Creed make the leap of faith into the palm of your hand? Or is this one portable knock off worth killing?

REVIEW: Halo 3: ODST (xbox360)

odst-coverThe Charge:
Prepare to Drop!

Opening Statement:
What began life as some manner of downloadable expansion pack has evolved considerably on its trip to retail. Instead of an affordable add-on for the venerable (yet still loved by millions) Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST drops as a full priced stand-alone product. With a new single player campaign, and all of the additional content from Halo 3’s now classic multiplayer suite carried over on a dedicated disc, and nary a sign of Master Chief, is ODST worth your scratch?

Facts of the Case:
Set just before the events of Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST tosses us into the boots of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST), or “Helljumper”. The Covenant has found Earth, and the city of New Mombassa is the first to feel the wrath of the Prophet of Regret. When your insertion into the city goes awry, it’s up to you to track down the missing members of your unit, piece together the events of the last few hours, and let the Covenant know that every step they take on Earth is going to cost them in precious blue and purple blood.

Review: Need for Speed-Shift (PS3/Xbox360)

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel

The Charge:
What kind of driver are you?

Opening Statement:
With the onset of every fall season (which we affectionately refer to as Hurricane Retail), there are several certainties. For racing fans, one certainty is always a new entry in the Need for Speed series. It’s been a while since EA’s venerable racing marquee brand has been worth notice or discussion, but Need for Speed: Shift hopes to change that. Does it stall at the start? Or is this one racer with horsepower to spare.

A Pair of Dragonballs

db

Reviews that is.  For the newly released feature film adaptation of the beloved Japanese property and occasional video game.  Here are a couple of reviews from the sister site, the Blu-ray written by yours truly, the DVD version penned by Steve.

Dragonball: Evolution (DVD)

Everything moves from destination to destination—picking up hitchhikers at each stop along the way—at such a relentless pace, the funny names and completely ridiculous events all start to blend together. The final act is just a mishmash of CG and action that is so unintelligible even those who did manage to latch onto the first 45 minutes of this “road” picture will be thrown completely for a loop. The titular Dragon Balls don’t even factor in until the end where they appear briefly for plot convenience before being lost again.

Dragonball: Evolution (Blu-ray)

Look, I don’t care if you’re 10 years old, live most of your life hopped up on Trix, can’t get enough of karate punching your younger brother, and eat/breathe/poop all things Dragonball—this movie is likely to piss you off. What a painful, moronic experience this is and that’s including the “for a PG-rated kids movie” disclaimer. Kids, you deserve better, especially if you’re a Dragonball devotee.  There might be a small contingent of the target demographic who won’t want to scoop out their eyeballs with a ladle after watching. But if you’re a parent of such a child, I recommend an immediate neurological exam.

Review: InFamous (PS3)

And they say that a hee-roh will save us!

And they say that a hee-roh will save us!

The Charge:
Save what’s left…or destroy it all!

Opening Statement:
The majority of truly great super hero stories begin with a tragedy, be it Superman’s home planet being destroyed, Batman witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, or Spider-Man failing to save his uncle due to his own teenaged arrogance.  This is meant to symbolize the earning of their powers, or the emotional anchor that will keep them from growing corrupt.  To keep them steadfast in the face of the sea of anarchy they will surely face in their quest to make the world a better place.  Sucker Punch, one of Sony’s top three prized development studios seek to test those very waters with InFamous; a sandbox title that grants players an incredible array of super-powers, and the choice to do good or do evil by those very abilities.  But is this long-awaited PS3 exclusive a mighty champion of the people, or does it fizzle out faster that the Joel Schumacher Batman movies?

Review: Punch-Out!! (Wii)

I kill you right in your stupid face yo!

I punch you right in your stupid face yo!

The Charge:
Little Mac is Back!

Opening Statement:
If there ever was a case of a video game developer catching lightning in a bottle, it would be Nintendo with their late 80s exultant ode to pugilism, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! on the original NES.  Picture the sweet science cranked all the way to 11, and that pretty much sums up what Punch-Out!! was all about.  Yet despite the simplicity of the game play, in 22 years, never again has a video game so depicted boxing with the same level  of success  as that beloved little NES title, not even its own sequel Super Punch-Out!! seven years later seemed to measure up.  After skipping two whole console generations, Little Mac and co have spent the past 15 years training for a comeback.  Following a brief flirtation with digital fisticuffs in Wii Sports Boxing, the Wii seemed like the natural stage for said return performance.  But is this once proud champion truly ready to step back into the squared circle, or is Punch-Out!! one fighter that should’ve spent a little longer in the gym?
