BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 73 – Nuclear Launch Detected!

PixelVerdict’s resident Canadian contingent returns for another week of hating the things you love, and they bring along a bitchin’ new theme song courtesy of Dan Moore. Jon and Steve reveal a sense of  malaise over Starcraft II, leading into a discussion on the Real Time Strategy genre as a whole, and whether or not it’s a dead horse. If so, how can it be saved? Steve talks some DeathSpank, and farmers who are looking for pooh! Meanwhile, Adam puts the kibosh on Dragon Quest (Warrior) IX (9).

This week’s random inquiry asks, “What was the last great Sega game?” Madness follows, and Jon says some very, very bad things.

How do you feel about real time strategy? Were you disappointed with Starcraft II? Care to defend the crapulence that is SEGA in the 21st Century? Why not Let us know in the comments below, over in the DVD Verdict Jury Room forums, or by emailing feedback@pixelverdict.com.

Sega Dreamcast in stock at Amazon for $88

This isn’t a retro post about how good the Sega Dreamcast is, because if you’ve read this site more than twice, you’ll notice this is a leitmotif around here.

This is a post for all the people who never got a chance to own a Dreamcast. You people missed out on something, but luck is a lady tonight, because you now have the chance to rectify this for less than a Benjamin.

There are Dreamcast systems in stock at Amazon. And they are $88.99. I don’t know if they invented some kind of time machine or what. It doesn’t matter. Do you know why?

There are Dreamcast systems in stock. You could be buying one right now.

Sega Emulator made official on iPhone

iphone-sega-dock

Now here’s an interesting development in the world of potent portable gaming. It appears that Sega is jumping onto the iPhone/Touch gaming platform by developing its own emulation service to kick out Sega Genesis games straight to your phone, as reported by Gizmodo.

Sega has released emulated bundles of games before on the iPhone, but this is different. Instead of a bundle job (like the Ultimate Collection pack that made the rounds on the consoles), this is to be a full-fledged Virtual Store, offering a-la-carte purchases of classic Genesis games for (slightly) inflated prices.

Bayonetta Demo Impressions, Climax-a-Riffic!

bay

Any action gamer worth his button mashing has probably had Sega’s Bayonetta on the radar screen for some time.  There’s a high-end pedigree behind Platinum Games’ eyeball-spanking hack and slasher and I’ve been following its slow march to a January release date for some time.  The demo made its way to Live this week and I dutifully–and excitedly–took it for a spin.  My reaction?

In Memoriam: The 10 Year Anniversary of the Dreamcast Launch

dc

Has it been ten years already?   I remember when I scored Sega’s little white box in 1999 and proceeded to play the living crap out of Soul Calibur.  After that it was full-on Sega-support as I bought everything from Tech Romancer to Shenmue to 18 Wheeler ProTrucker.

Sure, it may not have been “thinking,” but taking a look at the software library, as well as the cutting edge things it brought to the console market (online play, controllers that were not made for human hands), it’s easy to see why gaming fans hold the console in high (ish) esteem.

I was a big fan and the PlayStation 2′s steamrolling of the box (buttressed by a nauseating media hype machine) led to a feeling of Sony resentment that just recently dissipated with Casino Royale.

Anywho, in honor of this important day, a list of some of my favorite games after the jump.

Vote for the next Genesis XBLA game

genesis20

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sega Genesis (a horrible scorecard outlining my own mortality and extreme agedness) Sega has an online poll up for fans to vote on the game they’d most like to see released on XBLA. Talk about Sophie’s Choice here–every game is a standout. Can’t we have them ALL?

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sega Genesis, we’re putting the power back in the fans’ hands and letting you determine the next title we’ll release on Xbox LIVE Arcade! Just pick from the Genesis classics below and cast your vote between August 14th and August 21st.

The games up for consideration:

  • Earthworm Jim
  • Golden Axe II
  • Shining Force
  • Revenge of Shinobi
  • Streets of Rage
  • Toejam & Earl
  • Wonderboy

As of this writing, over 40,000 votes have been cast (and amazingly almost half of them for Earthworm Jim, never saw that coming) so be sure and help Dave log AS MANY VOTES AS POSSIBLE for Streets of Rage. He needs your help!

  • Bargain Bingeing: Golden Axe Beast Rider

    gabr

Hollywood Video has a massive video game sale a couple of weeks back and I came away with Lost Plant and Golden Axe for $5.  Haven’t played Lost Planet yet, but I’ve been hacking and slashing my way through Beast Rider, which, judging by reviews, I’d been prepared to loathe.

    Still five bucks.

    Is it worth it?

Consider the light zapper. No, consider it.

    Aww yeah.

    Aww yeah.

Consider the light zapper. No, seriously, think about it. For many children, the most amazing part of the original Nintendo Entertainment System was the NES Zapper, a silver-gray (quickly replaced with hunting orange) handheld pistol that allowed us to hunt ducks in our living room. It made an entire generation of boys and girls want to murder a snickering dog. It even made a gigantic, satisfying CLANG noise when you pulled the trigger. It had springs. Springs meant quality.

We’re spoiled today by our Wii remotes and our Natal technology (or we will be soon). It was a gun that shot light! Or at least that was what we were lead to believe. So there weren’t many game developers that opted to design games for it, or for the Light Phaser for the Sega Master System (my personal gun of choice because they modeled it off an obscure Japanese anime). These were novelties at best–a clever use of cathode-ray technology that to this day I still can’t quite understand (magic, I assume).
