REVIEW: X-Men: The Arcade Game (XBOX360/PS3)

The Charge:
“Welcome… TO DIE”

Opening Statement:
Konami can go straight to hell. Do you hear me, you greedy bastards! I’ve already given you six hundred dollars worth of quarters playing X-Men: The Arcade Game in the arcades throughout the nineties.

Now you want me to pony up on Xbox Live and PSN to play it again? Forget it!

Hey, wait a minute. Where did my credit card come from? Hey, I never entered that… wait… “Download Complete”? What the—?

Grumble, grumble. You win this round, Konami.

REVIEW: The UnderGarden (XBOX360/PC)

Prioritizing ambiance and mood over high scores or game mechanics, this Xbox Live title is an exercise in meditative curiosity, an ethereal float through subterranean caverns, spreading pollen and plant life, with some puzzle solving mechanics thrown in for good measure.

BLAST PROCESSING! Episode 51: The Efficient Gamer

bp_51

Dave, Tim, and Erich run through the games they’ve been playing—including Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, ‘Splosion Man, Dante’s Inferno, and Street Fighter IV—before looking ahead to big (and little) titles on the horizon. Dave wonders whether he should try Heavy Rain, Tim wonders whether he’ll be able to find a PS3 before God of War III comes out, and Erich wonders whether the Xbox Live Arcade Game Room will be worth downloading. No Symposium Ad Nauseum this week, but we have a very good excuse. At least, I think we do. You’ll have to listen to find out.

Make your own excuses in the comments below, over in the DVD Verdict Jury Room forums, or by emailing us at feedback@pixelverdict.com.

You can listen to the show with the player below, download it here, or subscribe through iTunes or by adding our feed to your podcatcher of choice.

Vote for the next Genesis XBLA game

genesis20

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sega Genesis (a horrible scorecard outlining my own mortality and extreme agedness) Sega has an online poll up for fans to vote on the game they’d most like to see released on XBLA. Talk about Sophie’s Choice here–every game is a standout. Can’t we have them ALL?

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sega Genesis, we’re putting the power back in the fans’ hands and letting you determine the next title we’ll release on Xbox LIVE Arcade! Just pick from the Genesis classics below and cast your vote between August 14th and August 21st.

The games up for consideration:

  • Earthworm Jim
  • Golden Axe II
  • Shining Force
  • Revenge of Shinobi
  • Streets of Rage
  • Toejam & Earl
  • Wonderboy

As of this writing, over 40,000 votes have been cast (and amazingly almost half of them for Earthworm Jim, never saw that coming) so be sure and help Dave log AS MANY VOTES AS POSSIBLE for Streets of Rage. He needs your help!

  • Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (XBLA, PSN)

"Hey Shredder! Put that statue back you bloated beanbag!"

Tonight I dine on turtle soup.

    The Charge:
    Kla-chink! LET’S KICK SHELL!!

    Opening Statement:
Let’s begin today’s review with a moment of self-reflection.  If you’ve been a gamer since the 1980s, you’re probably just as guilty as me, and innumerable legions of others; of pumping a near college tuition’s worth of quarters into the multitudinous myriad of beat’em ups that once dominated the video arcades of times gone by.  Continue reading Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (XBLA, PSN)

Go Ahead and Buy That Latte: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled Now $5 Cheaper

    tmnt_reshelled_pv

A move of generosity or a video game publisher bullied into submission by the gaming community? Either way, those of us who complained about next week’s XBLA Summer of Arcade offering TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled costing $15 can stop our bellyaching. As reported on Joystiq, Ubisoft is letting the amphibious teen brawler go for $10 (800 MS to you and me).

Though all but one of the “Summer” games are hitting with a 1200 point price tag (platformer ‘Splosion Man being the other tenner title), Re-Shelled got the biggest flack from fans, who weren’t sure giving a 15-year-old game an HD facelift was worth the extra scratch. Now they’ll just have to decide whether it’s worth $10.

The Genre That Won’t Die: Zombie Apocalypse Coming to XBLA and PSN

    zombie-apocalypse-017

Fresh from Konami, here are some screenshots for Zombie Apocalypse, the latest in a recent rash of undead-related games. In Apocalypse, up to four players can take on waves of shambling braineaters (they really hate it when you call them that, by the way). The goal: “to survive 55 days of battles across seven environments.” Survive and unlock seven additional challenge modes.

I like twin-stick shooters as much as the next guy, and had a ton of fun blasting zombies in Left 4 Dead, but with zombie modes in the most recent Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto games, and a sequel to Dead Rising on the horizon, it’s time to ask how many zombie games is too many zombie games? Konami will no doubt find out when the downloadable Zombie Apocalypse hits Xbox LIVE Arcade and the Playstation Network sometime in Q2.

Looking at the screen shots, their biggest problem might be avoiding complaints that they’re borrowing a bit too much from Left 4 Dead. See what I mean (and read the full press release) after the break.

Confirmed: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for PSN, XBLA

    d47d52705d79e5c1b9b29d84b31eb7a9

We speculated it, and now Capcom confirmed it: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is indeed coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360, but not quite in the way we hoped. The game will be released this summer on the PSN and Xbox Live networks for about fifteen dollars, but will not be receiving the HD remix treatment that Street Figher II received.
